Background
When the school started we were purely a private school, parents were expected to pay school fees in time to enable the school offer education, counseling etc etc. and that would be that. The reality is that about half of the students at the school are coming from a dire poverty background, they are only at the school with their desire to study and support ranging from good organizations and many announced and un announced ordinary people.
The most disturbing category of students in need, are those who enrolled with seemingly good financial backing but became desperate along the way. Some end up being tolerated by the school, however, the school capacity to do so without jeopardizing its very existence or being unfair to those who promptly pay full fees, is very limited... We have therefore tried to find sponsors for the needy and dropping out of school should never be let to became an option. The school supports a few very persistent and articulate students who come forward with their story and refuse to leave the school, most just disappears in the Dark
This web page is an extension of the initiative to give a hand to them.
As this programme is still in its development stage we welcome your suggestions and contributions so please write to us.
The Way Forward.
This web page shall list and profile some individual cases and offer them to be sponsored. We currently have about genuine 20 kids standing on very shaky grounds. We shall offer them for sponsorship, once this list is done with; we shall extend the list to give partial sponsorship to the kids in grey zone who pays with a lot of difficulty and who are day scholars in uncondusive environment. Generally boarding students are better off financially as compared to their day counterparts.
The next step is to device a system of identification, verification and eventual sponsorship of those who did not even dear to show up to a school gate.
How to Sponsor.
- Pick a kid you intend to sponsor
- You are encouraged to meet the kid and verify the situation
- You then plead, How much you want to contribute, However we encourage students to be fully sponsored boarding students so that she is offered accommodation and meals. Inability to pay fees indicates other problems back home.
- Take joining instructions. The school shall follow up from there onwards and keep you updated of her progress, you shall be encouraged to visit and enjoy your kid.
The cost of sponsoring a student assuming a full sponsorship is as follows
• School fees for one year is between TAS 1,100,000/= and 1,300,000/= (ignoring the decimals)
• Uniforms and other essentials TAS 300,000/=
• Pocket Money TAS 200,000/=
• Fare when the school closes TAS 200,000/=
These figures are for budgeting purposes only as needs vary. Actual costs shall be worked on based on a particular case.
Current Organisations sponsoring students at this school
These are some of organizations (Number of students), they are all focusing their assistance to Maasai women, except for the last one MWEDO (5), EUMUSOI (8), TEMBO PROJECT(7), UHAI CENTER (8),
The other one is NGORONGORO PASTORALIST COUNCIL (5), This is also helping Maasai students of all genders, however it is badly run and has almost abandoned its students some have started dropping out of school.
The School MAIRIVA secondary school is technically sponsoring (tolerating) a big number of students we are sometimes unable to turn back for various reasons, However there is a limit we can do this without being un fair to paying students staff remuneration and without compromising our existence and requisite growth as a school.
Individuals sponsoring students
The list of individuals is long and we are still building it. The list below is known to us partly because we had suggested students to them or we had inquired. We shall in due course without prejudicing the kids write a full list.
- Paul Ruhinda and his friends (One student)
- Megan Masaki (One student)
- Mrs Msuya (One student)
- Anna Mswata (One student)
- Josephine Mkunde (One student)
- Mrs Mponeja, Bibii, Rachel and Mrs Alice Mungure (One student)
- Anna Kavishe (One student)
Students in dire need of help.
Below is a list of students we now know of their need for help. We shall give some profile of the stories we know by heart, now that there is this forum we shall slowly add more stories and photographs.
- Hassan Kizinga. A form one student twice orphaned. The author of this page had the privilege to know this kid as toddler. Biological parents passed away out of the sickness that kills a couple. She was taken over by a foster mother, the foster mother has also passed away and family set up ceased to exist, he is a likable boy and managed to live between two families, his half sisters and brothers in DSM who gave him a bed and a neigbour who had allowed him to take all meals at his home. Hassan was brought to this school by the half sisters and brothers who also deserve to feature in this list. Please help Hassani become a man.
- Leila Juma Shaaban. A form three student and a housegirl somewhere in Arusha. She is an Orphan of a single mother who have never seen or heard of her father. Her Mother died having worked as a house girl to some Asian family in Arusha. The Asian family decided to pay for her fees through her uncle who tried to make a living out of it. When the Asians discovered the siphon, instead of bypassing it they stopped the whole process. Leila decided to look for a job, a job she had seen her mother doing all her life ... a house girl. She landed in a house of a kind Police lady who refused her to drop out of school, she has since allowed her to continue coming to the school and after coming home 'do whatever she can do'. The meager income of a Tanzanian house girl are dutifully used to pay for her fees. She is deep in arrears plus she grind herself hard to please her mistress. Leila needs to be put in a Boarding facility to get a bed, hot meals and after that good lesoons at Mairiva. So please help us make that happen. (Leila Managed to complete form four she is now waiting for her results, she still needs to be supported to higher secondary education)
- Neema Liston and Saidi Secoutoure. They are now both NOT coming to School any more. We inquired and found that The Father of Saidi died of AIDS. This father was related to and sponsoring Neema Liston. The mother is now living with AIDS. After this calamity, Saidi was taken over by his uncle for one term only. Neema dropped, when asked Saidi said that Neema does not have fees but she is daily studying and copying all notes Saidi is writing. We asked her to come to school without fees while sorting out her case. She was sponsored by the school for three terms. During all this, a very good students became 'failures'. Sponsorship for Saidi ceased, Neema is reserved and shy of her downfall. They have now both disappeared. But since they are living near the school, we can surprise them with a news a person willing to see them through.
- Exaudi Wimo Laizer. A form six Masai student who was paying his own school fees by becoming a manual labourer and selling family properties. He had a government placement which is heavily subsidized and very cheap. Cheap? he could not afford it!... He worked and saved for one year. By the time he had some money, he tried to reclaim his position only to be told he was long replaced. He came to Mairiva with what ever he had. He one day came to say good bye to us (and that is how we got this long story)....; The parents had run out of things to sell. We asked him to stay. As if to underline the impossible background, one day her mother got sick, she came to the school to collect the boy to guide her to a proper hospital and pay her the fare and medical charges. Exaudi had some Ths 30.000/= he had solicited somewhere, by the time he came back to school he had spent on his mother about Ths 20,000/= . He gave to us the balance to reduce his school fees bill, of course we did not receive it!, but we cannot keep too many for too long of cases like these without us falling in the ditch they are from, so please help Exaudi. (Exaudi sat for his NECTA form six examinations Feb 2009 leaving behind a huge debt with the school)
- Jeniffer Godson. A form five student who was brought by her 'husband' disguising himself as a relative, a guardian. Jennifer got married with all her parents blessings immediately after sitting for her form four exams last year. She had good marks and the 'husband' decided to enroll her at our school. Little did she know that she was a wife of convenience as the husband hailing in Mwanza and teaching in Arusha had a senior more permanent wife back home. When the real wife was due to visit apparently to collect her husband to attend some university in Mwanza. The man fabricated a brawl which led Jennifer Packing temporarily to her parents. On sneaking back to see how much of the dust have settled she learnt to her sorrow that her husband has sold everything and returned the rented room they were living and that the real wife had been around and have collected the husband. With this Jennifer lost a 'husband' and a financier. The sad end to this story is she is three months pregnant. She revealed it to us, she kept coming to school until the day they closed the school (form fives are in their holidays now). When discussing her ordeal, much as it is clear pregnancy is illegible here, she was not talking of leaving the school, she was asking for a boarding placement as her mother had become a pebble in her shoes and the father was crying every time he saw her. She was day dreaming ... and with her dreams we may be re-writing the school rules. We do not have MCH facilities here. We shall let her come as long as it does not harm others, she is going to have her baby, (she had an option of abortion) and she is going to come back to School, Not necessarily Mairiva. Please sponsor this Case. Jennifer has come back to school, she has left her lovely baby with her mother, she has had to re peat form five, with her resolve nothing can stop her.
- Isack Hudson
- Paulo Eliphodi
- Emmanuel Temu
- Emanuel Gerald
- Joyce Isack (she has a quarter sponsorship from Christian brothers .. the Christian brother withdrew their sponsorship and Joyce left the school)

- Sapuro Ngoyoo form V,
- Nelson Mark form I and
- Yahana Saitoti form III.
- Theresia Baltazar
- Steven Athanas
We have not recorded all their stories, we know they are equally horrible, We are not after their ordeal, We are after their rescue, We know they need our help so please do the needful.
